Adventures in Linux Installation
This page started with my purchase of a Dell Latitude in 1/2007.
I expected that Linux installation would be easy on this laptop,
as it had been in the laptop that I had before. But it turned out
to be quite a challenge, and so I thought I will share the experience.
Since then, I have been through installations on several other laptops.
I keep adding pages that describe installations on platforms
where the install process turns out to be not so straight-forward,
- Ubuntu 6.10 on Dell Latitude 620. This was quite a challenge. (Initial installation: Jan 21, 2007; Last update: July 8, 2007)
- Ubuntu 7.10 on Dell Latitude 610. This was mostly a breeze. I
did need to install the 915 resolution package to get native resolution
on the laptop panel. Every thing else (including sound, wireless, etc)
worked out of the box, so there is no need for a page. (Install date:
early 2008.)
- Ubuntu 8.04 on Toshiba Portege 3500,
which is a TabletPC. It does not have a built-in CD drive, which
made it more difficult, but not too bad.
- Ubuntu 8.04 on Fujitsu Lifebook P-2040. This was also a breeze.
X worked perfectly out of the box. Hibernation works
fine, but not suspend. The processor (Transmeta), of course, is
very slow.
- Samsung 205BW LCD monitor with Xorg.
It is a really nice monitor, once you get it to work.
