Several of the graduate students entering the department in Fall 2011 have sent me email about working with me, but unfortunately, due to several deadlines, I have not been able to respond.

I do not expect to take on new PhD students other than the ones that are working with me and/or have received summer support offers from me.

I may take 0 to 2 new M.S. students, but since my availability is stretched already, these would have to be students that are exceptionally strong. In particular, I am interested in students that, in comparison with other new M.S. students in this department, have an unusually strong background in programming languages, compilers, or systems in general, with exceptional implementation strengths. If you think you are such a student, please send me email with a resume and a detailed description of your key projects.

If you are not sure that you can make a convincing case now, but you are still interested in working with me, then your best bet is to take CSE 509 this semester with me, and do well in the course in terms of exams, projects and/or class room discussions.
