The Touring Machine System: An Open Distributed Platform for
Information Networking Applications

The Touring Machine system is an open, extensible software platform to enable rapid construction of distributed multimedia, third-party, multi-supplier applications that operate across heterogeneous network transport fabrics to potentially mobile users. The goals of this project are

  • to overcome the sources of complexity obstructing timely and profitable operation of open and extensible public telecommunication networks,
  • to enable multimedia, personalized, nomadic and multi-point applications to emerge making maximum use of those public networks, and
  • to provide reliable, secure, and flexible set of infrastructure networking services that facilitate open application development, deployment and operation.

The architectural principles for information networking synthesized, validated and extended in this project are consistent with industry efforts at open distributed processing (ODP). This paper describes the functionality of the system made available to application programmers and the underlying distributed architecture.
